Micro injection moulding calls for high precision on very small parts. With the MTT modular system, we use a master mould with part-specific conversion sets – an economical solution for micro parts where tooling effort and technical feasibility are in balance.

Economical tooling for micro injection moulding

With very small plastic parts, the tooling concept determines precision, cost and project duration at an early stage. A completely new dedicated mould is not the most economical solution in every case – least of all when several similar micro parts are to be produced within a defined technical framework.

This is exactly where the MTT modular system comes in. The master mould provides the recurring basis, while part-specific mould inserts and the matching ejector mechanism are configured for each part. The basic structure stays standardised without generalising the part geometry.

Master mould and conversion set

The master mould serves as a technical platform for different micro parts. The conversion set contains the part-specific mould inserts for the nozzle and ejector sides together with the mechanism required for demoulding and part handling.

This reduces the effort compared with a dedicated mould, while the functional areas that are critical for the part are still designed specifically. It is of particular interest for small parts with a manageable number of cavities and a clearly defined geometry.

The principle of the MTT modular system

  • Master mould standardised mould base for different micro parts
  • Conversion set part-specific mould inserts for the nozzle and ejector sides plus a matched ejector mechanism
  • Cost efficiency reduced tooling effort through a reusable base structure
  • Flexibility mechanical functions such as slides can be accommodated depending on the part geometry

Clarifying technical limits early

The modular system does not replace technical assessment. In micro injection moulding in particular, gating, venting, demoulding, wall thicknesses and mould filling have to be examined early. Not every geometry automatically fits into a compact master mould system.

Where the boundary conditions are right, further part variants can be produced economically on the same master mould without having to rebuild the basic structure completely for each project.

Designed for the smallest structures

  • wall thicknesses down to around 0.1 mm
  • shot weights from 0.015 g
  • high precision on the smallest geometries and function-critical areas
  • mould and process design matched to micro parts

Why this approach suits BERGER

BERGER grew out of its injection moulding technical centre. Assessing tooling concept, material and process at an early stage is therefore part of how we work. The MTT modular system combines this technical groundwork with an economical tooling approach for micro parts.

What this gives our customers is not a blanket standard solution but a structured route to precise small plastic parts – with a clear assessment of where the modular system fits and where an individual tooling concept makes more sense.
